Stoke boss Mark Hughes has revealed he missed out on signing Emmanuel Riviere to Newcastle this summer.
Newcastle won the race to land Riviere from Monaco and Stoke will come up against the Frenchman on Monday night when Stoke play host to Newcastle at the Britannia Stadium.
Hughes admitted the move failed to happen as they did not get the feeling that Riviere was committed to a switch to the Britannia Stadium
"We had conversations with people close to him," admitted Hughes.
"There was an indication he may be available this summer so we pursued it to a certain extent.
"We were able to offer decent money but there has to be a feeling that the enthusiasm we have for a certain player is reciprocated.
"We didn't get that from the player or his advisers."
