Sky Sports understands Newcastle are open to offers for Papiss Cisse, but the striker is keen to stay and prove himself to new manager Steve McClaren

Newcastle would be prepared to let striker Papiss Cisse go for the right price, Sky sources understand.

The Senegal international moved to St James’ Park from Freiburg for £9m in 2012 and scored 11 goals in 22 matches.

Cisse was banned for seven games for spitting at Manchester United defender Jonny Evans in March, with Newcastle losing every game in his absence.

The 30-year-old returned for the final three matches of the campaign as United secured their survival on the final day.

Cisse remains keen to stay on Tyneside and prove himself to new manager Steve McClaren, although he may be sold on in order to finance further signings.

“I’m here, I’m Newcastle and I have one and a half (years on my) contract,” he told Sky Sports News HQ as he visited community projects he has helped finance.

“I am a Newcastle striker. I just think about my holiday and when I go back to Newcastle I will try to work hard and try to make the team.”

Cisse feels the introduction of McClaren will provide a welcome boost to the club as they look to improve on their 15th place finish last season.

“It’s good for Newcastle because he’s been the England manager before,” added Cisse. “It is good to change something in the team.”

As for the spitting ban, Cisse insists the incident in the 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United was out of character.

“I accept, that’s not football, football is to enjoy. I know I am a good person,” he said. “That happens just in football, outside football you would never see that happen with me.”
