Manchester City legend Shaun Goater says he would be "amazed" if Vincent Kompany was not at the club next season.
The 33-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season with a new deal yet to be agreed - although manager Pep Guardiola has stated talks are ongoing with a decision likely after this weekend's FA Cup final against Watford.
Despite Kompany experiencing another injury hit season, making only 17 starts in 25 appearances, he has played a key role during the run-in as well as scoring a spectacular winner against Leicester City in the penultimate game of the campaign.
Goater believes the Belgian still has plenty to offer the club, both on and off the field.
"He is a leader, representing the club both home and abroad the right way and I would be amazed if he isn't a player at the club next season," Goater told Sky Sports.
"He still has the ability to play a number of games and we all know he won't let anyone down if he is given another year or two."
Kompany lifted his fourth Premier League trophy after a 4-1 win over Brighton ensured City pipped rivals Liverpool by one point.
And he himself admitted the latest triumph was both the most difficult, and the most satisfying, of them all.
"It was the hardest and most satisfying Premier League title win ever," Kompany said.
"Liverpool were exceptional this year and I don't mean to rub it in - it is what it is - they didn't deserve to be second this year.
"But that only makes me that much more happy that we've been up against such a good team and when our backs were against the wall we kept finding the results.
"This title is a combination of the staff, the group of players we have and the desire we have to overachieve, and it's hard to over-achieve with a team as good as we have"
"I'm so happy for myself, the team and our fans."
