Skysports.com exclusively revealed that Barton has asked to leave the club after contract talks broke down.
Now the Eastlands outfit have confirmed that a request was made, but it has been rejected.
"The manager has publicly stated his desire to keep the player at Manchester City Football Club," said a City statement.
"A second round of negotiations between the club and the player's representatives took place today and Manchester City wishes to continue those talks."
The 23-year-old is now likely to consider his options, although now his feelings are known, his position at the club may have become untenable.
City are now likely to be bracing themselves for offers - with the transfer deadline just over 24 hours away - and must decide whether to keep him or not.
