Manuel Pellegrini says Manchester City's sole focus now is to finish as Premier League runners-up behind Chelsea.

City have relinquished their crown to the Blues this season but are three points clear of third-placed Arsenal, although they have played a game more than the Gunners.

Champions League qualification is a certainty for City but Pellegrini has stressed the importance of taking second place a year after winning the division.

"The most important thing is always to win the title but if you can’t win the title then it is important to try to finish second," he said. "We want to finish as near the top of the table as we can.

"It is important for all of the big teams to win the title and if not win the title then qualify for the Champions League and get the most amount of points you can.

"We have had the pressure for the whole year and we played very well in December. We were at the top of the table and we had qualified for the next stage of the Champions League.

"We made some mistakes when we finished the season and that is why we were not involved in the title."

More from Swansea V Man City

While the current campaign has not been a vintage one for City, who will end it without a trophy, their star striker Sergio Aguero has enjoyed a glittering season and goes into the final two fixtures having scored 31 times in 40 appearances.

Pellegrini played down the impressive statistics but does not deny that Aguero - who still scored 28 goals last season despite a series of muscle injuries - is enjoying his best season to date and is adamant he will never entertain the idea of selling him.

He said: "I think it is important for Kun. It is the season he has scored most goals in his career.

"But it is important for our team to be a scoring team also, not just for Sergio. I am happy because we continue being the team that scores the most goals and for me that is important.

"It is not so important as winning but you can win and be a scoring team."
