Real Betis full-back Juanfran has turned down a move to Middlesbrough, Sky Sports understands.
The 25-year-old held talks with Boro last week, after the Sky Bet Championship club agreed to pay an initial £500,000, although the deal could have risen by another £1million depending on appearances and promotion clauses.
However, after considering his options, Juanfran has decided he does not want to move to England, with interest now emerging from rivals Spanish clubs and also in Italy.
Boro head coach Aitor Karanka worked with Juanfran during their time together at Real Madrid, and had made him one of his top summer targets.
Now Karanka will have to look elsewhere in his bid for a new right-back, having allowed Hungarian loanee Jozsef Varga to return to Debrecen.
