New Latics deal for veteran shot-stopper

Goalkeeper Mike Pollitt will spend a seventh year at Wigan after agreeing a new 12-month deal with the club. The 39-year-old's previous Latics contract expired at the end of last season, casting some doubt over his future. However, the services of Wigan's longest-serving player have now been secured for another campaign as back-up to new permanent signing Ali Al Habsi. "Mike is a terrific goalkeeper first and foremost with great experience and he continues to set standards on a daily basis that the younger players can follow," said manager Roberto Martinez. "He has been patient during his time at the club but has never been anything less than totally professional and committed to the club." Pollitt, who arrived at Wigan from Rotherham in 2005, is delighted to remain at the DW Stadium. "It had been an ongoing issue for a few weeks and now we've gladly all come to an agreement," he said. "I'm 39 now, approaching my seventh season at the club and although I am keen to develop as a coach at some stage right now I'm focused on the playing aspect of the game because I feel I've still got plenty to offer to the team given the opportunity."
