Defender Roger Johnson has returned to Championship side Charlton following a spell in India playing for FC Pune City.

The 32-year-old spent six months at The Valley in the second part of last season and helped the team to climb clear of relegation trouble to finish in 12th place.

Charlton's interim boss Karel Fraeye believes the former Birmingham defender's experience will be crucial following his decision to sign an 18-month contract.

"I'm very pleased to welcome Roger back to The Valley," said Fraeye.

"He's obviously a player who knows the club and, importantly, knows the league. He did the job last season, he brings a big voice on the pitch and he will bring us the experience we need."

While at Birmingham, Johnson won the League Cup in 2011, with a 2-1 victory over Arsenal at Wembley.
