WOLVES AGREE FEE FOR NEWTON
The Midlands club have agreed a fee of £850,000 for the 25-year-old right-sided midfielder, which will increase to £1 million should Newton help Wolves reach the Premiership.
Wolves chief executive Jez Moxey revealed Newton was boss Dave Jones' principal target this summer and he was delighted to have finally got his man after weeks of uncertainty.
"The delay in concluding the deal has been two-fold. Firstly Charlton wanted £1.5 million - a price we were not prepared to pay," Moxey said.
"However, we will increase the initial payment we will make to them to £850,000.
"The second problem is that having agreed to let Greg Shields go on loan to Preston and then seeing John Robinson suffer cartilage problems, Charlton were reluctant to let another midfielder go."
Welsh winger Robinson requires surgery on his injured knee and is expected to miss the first four weeks of the new campaign, but Addicks boss Alan Curbishley instead pulled the plug on Shields' loan move to Deepdale in order for the deal to go through.
Newton struggled to hold down a first team spot last season and his only goal of a disappointing campaign saved Charlton from an FA Cup humiliation against non-league Dagenham and Redbridge in a Third Round replay.
