Watford captain Troy Deeney has been fined £20,000 over the comments he made about referee David Coote following the 3-3 draw with Bournemouth.

Deeney admitted the charge brought against him by the Football Association, that the comments he made questioned the integrity of the match official and/or were personally offensive in relation to him.

He accused Bournemouth midfielder Dan Gosling of "trying to do" Hornets team-mate Tom Cleverley in a tackle during the Premier League game at the Vitality Stadium on January 2.

Gosling was booked following the incident and Deeney further claimed Coote had "bottled it" over that decision and others during the game.

Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe defended Gosling when told about Deeney's claim.

Howe said: "I don't think it was dangerous, Dan's tackle. For me, it's not a red card. I know Dan inside and out, he's not that type of player.

"Yes, he's mistimed the tackle. But in terms of those (Deeney's) words, that's not in Dan's make-up."
