Wigan may have salvaged a point in the final minute against Birmingham, yet Gary Caldwell's overriding emotion was one of frustration that his team could not claim all three in a 1-1 draw.

Substitute Craig Davies picked an opportune moment to score for the first time since September by turning home Will Grigg's late cross versus a team he once scored four in 19 minutes against when playing for Barnsley.

It ensured Latics picked up a share of the spoils having been minutes away from a defeat that would have been inflicted on them from David Davis, who seemed to encroach on Clayton Donaldson's penalty before turning the rebound home on the stroke of half-time.

"There was one team that tried to win it," Caldwell stated after the game.

"They got gifted a goal from not our doing and we had to chase a game against a team that likes to pack the defence and counter attack which is never easy. I thought we controlled the situation really well and if anything deserved to win the game so it's a bit of frustration."

In spite of the equaliser, Caldwell still delivered criticism of referee Jeremy Simpson and his officiating crew for failing to spot Davis' advanced position from a penalty which Donaldson may have won from an offside position when he was tripped by Adam Bogdan.

"The rule is you can't go in the box until the ball's hit, it's clear," Caldwell added.

"I would just like them to own it up at times to say 'I've made a mistake'. It would help.

"It's the sheer defiance that there's nothing wrong when really there is something wrong. A goal could have been avoided.

"I felt he was marginally offside as well. You can't get that many things wrong in a football match as important as this."

Davies' late strike took Wigan's tally to four points from three matches in their first season back in the Championship after winning League One last term.

"I'm pleased with the players, with their application, but I'm not happy, and I'm sure the players aren't happy, with the points total," Caldwell noted. "I think it should be higher and we have to do something about that."

Opposing boss Gary Rowett countered Caldwell's argument about Davis' goal by insisting Donaldson would have scored a retaken effort having struck his first attempt straight at Bogdan.

"I couldn't see it, I wish he had (encroached) because I'm sure Clayton would have scored with the retaken one," he argued.

"Eight weeks ago the goalkeeper would have been sent off but now it's the double jeopardy rules. A point I think was a fair reflection of the game.

"They are a good side Wigan, I think they'll have a good season. I'm sure Gary's a little bit frustrated that they couldn't win the game."

Birmingham, who would have moved level with the pace-setters had they won, are still unbeaten in this year's Championship and are mirroring the start they had to the previous campaign, when 11 points from the first 15 available saw them flying high.

"I'm quite enthused at the start," Rowett said.

"There will be a lot of teams that will panicking a little bit after three games and wondering what work they need to do in the final few weeks of the transfer window. I'm quite pleased with the way we've started the season."
