Veteran Rams stopper quits after fresh injury
Derby County's veteran defender Alan Stubbs has called time on his playing career following a recurrence of a knee injury.
After battling his way back to fitness after undergoing surgery last season he re-injured the knee in Derby's opening day defeat to Doncaster Rovers.
Stubbs began his career with Bolton and made over 200 appearances for the club before going on to play for the likes of Celtic, Everton (twice) and Sunderland before joining Derby in January.
Retired
"Alan Stubbs is being forced to hang up his boots due to a re-occurrence of the knee injury he sustained against Arsenal last season," Rams chairman Adam Pearson told the club's official website.
"It's a blow because Alan is not just a great player and organiser, he is also a fantastic leader and a great human being.
"The way he has handled himself over this injury and being forced to call it a day is testament to the kind of person he is."
