Wigan Athletic have confirmed the signing of midfielder Adam Forshaw from Brentford for an undisclosed fee on a four-year-deal.

The 22-year-old was given permission to talk to the club last week after the Latics had an offer accepted and the player has now completed a medical, agreed personal terms and moved to the DW Stadium.

Forshaw, last year’s Sky Bet League 1 Player of The Season, had been a long-standing target for manager Uwe Rosler, who signed him for Brentford in 2012, and he is delighted to have finally got his man.

“First of all, I want to say that Adam was always my number one target as a permanent replacement for Jordi Gomez. We are all therefore delighted that he is joining us,” Rosler said.

“Of course he is a player I know well, I initially loaned him during my time at Brentford and he gained his first regular league football experience there under me.

“We bought him permanently and now I am very happy to sign, for a second time, a player who developed into the best player in League One last season.

“Our patience has been rewarded and we have got a fantastic young player at the right age and the right price for Wigan Athletic."

Forshaw joined Brentford on loan in February 2012, before joining permanently in May of the same year and becoming influential in the club’s rise into the Sky Bet Championship.

Last season he played 39 times in League 1, scoring eight goals and, as well as claiming the Player of the Year award for the division, Forshaw was also named in the League 1 PFA Team of the Year.

“Adam will be a big part of our future at this football club; he is the right age, with the right qualities and desire to progress here," Rosler added.

“He will take the Championship in his stride and, like all of our signings, we believe he has the potential to flourish in the Premier League as well.”
