Transfer news: Kenny Jackett defends Wolverhampton Wanderers' lack of big signings

Wolverhampton Wanderers manager Kenny Jackett has defended his lack of big spending in the summer transfer window.

The Championship club made just three signings, two of them being free transfers. The signatures of Tommy Rowe and Rajiv van La Parra were secured back in June, while George Saville arrived from Chelsea in late August for an undisclosed transfer fee.

Wolves were reportedly interested in a number of strikers including Andy Delort and Patrick Bamford, but they were reluctant to pay over the odds.

Jackett has now defended his policy, pointing out that players like Nouha Dicko have proved good value for money.

“I don’t think you can look outside your own club too much - if you just look elsewhere, that’s pretty poor,” he told the Express & Star.

“You’ve got to run a club how you want to run it - work out your financial parameters and stick to that. We paid £300,000 for Dicko and he’s given us very good value for money, and at 22 too.

“We bought every single player last year with a view to them delivering in the Championship. I didn’t think there was one player brought in who couldn’t do us a job up a level.

“That was quite often the reason for the investment.

“The prices have gone up and up; Leonardo Ulloa went from Brighton to Leicester for £7m.

“Ross McCormack went to Fulham for £11m, Sean Morrison went for around £3m to £4m to Cardiff and Adam Forshaw went to Wigan for what was quoted £3.7m.

“They’re all players we know very well and for those with the increased parachute money, they’re trying to get up at the first attempt. If you make it, it’s worth it.”
