Ipswich remain top of the Sky Bet Championship on goal difference following a hard-fought 2-1 victory at Deepdale over newly-promoted Preston.

Mick McCarthy's side took the lead in the first half against the run of play through a Brett Pitman header. Daniel Johnson then equalised for the home side, finishing off a fine counter attacking move.

Ryan Fraser restored the visitors' lead after 65 minutes, curling in a superb effort from outside the box. Preston thought they had equalised for the second time through Joe Garner. However, the goal was ruled out by the referee, in the process ending the Lilywhite's unbeaten start to the season.

Elsewhere, Brighton moved up to second with a 1-0 win at home to Blackburn, courtesy of a strike from Kazenga LuaLua. The former Newcastle United winger took his tally of goals this season to three with a smart finish midway through the first half.

Leeds and Sheffield Wednesday shared the spoils in the day's early kick-off with a 1-1 derby draw at Elland Road. A magnificent volley from Marco Matias put the Owls ahead in the first half before Chris Wood equalised from close range after the break to rescue a point for Uwe Rosler.

Hull slipped out of the division's automatic promotion places with a last-gasp 2-1 defeat away at Charlton. Two goals for new signing Tjaronn Chery and one for Charlie Austin helped the home side to a comfortable 3-0 lead. However, second half goals for Rotherham's Jonson Clarke-Harris and Tom Thorpe briefly restored the Millers hopes of an unlikely comeback. Austin finally settled the game from the penalty spot after Sebastian Polter was brought down in the box.

Bolton scored their first goal of the new season in a 1-1 draw against Nottingham Forest at the Macron. However, Stephen Dobbie came off the bench to equalised and move Bolton off the foot of the table.

Fulham snatched a late goal to secure a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield at Craven Cottage. The visitors took the lead midway through to second half through Nahki Wells. However, a 94th minute equaliser from Cauley Woodrow secured the home team a draw, ending their run of two consecutive defeats.
