Highly-rated stopper Packwood has been called up by Jurgen Klinsmann for a training camp ahead of Wednesday's friendly with Ukraine in Cyprus.
Packwood has represented the USA at Under 17, Under 18 and Under 20 level and he has now been rewarded for his form with a call-up to the senior set-up.
The 20-year-old, who can also play in midfield, has battled back from a horrific leg break last season which sidelined him for eight months, but he is now fully fit and has impressed for Birmingham.
Packwood enjoyed a successful spell on loan at Bristol Rovers earlier this term before being recalled by Birmingham in December and he has established himself in Lee Clark's starting XI since returning to St Andrew's.
He is relishing the chance to link up with the USA squad and concedes he has been surprised at just how quickly he has recovered from his serious injury.
"I'm delighted to be included in the full US national squad, especially as it's only just over a year since my leg break," Packwood told Sky Sports.
"At the time we thought the recovery would take much longer and so to be included at this level so soon after that injury is tremendous."
