Adam Johnson has been refused permission to appeal against his conviction and sentence for a child sex offence.

The disgraced former Sunderland and England winger was jailed for six years in March for engaging in sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl.

The 28-year-old had sought to appeal against both that conviction and sentence but a spokesman for the Judicial Office said that had been rejected by the Court of Appeal.

They said his "applications for permission to appeal against sentence and conviction were refused. He was notified yesterday [Monday July 11] and has 14 days to make a renewed application to appeal."

A statement from Johnson's solicitor read: "We have received notification that Adam Johnson's applications for leave to appeal against his conviction and sentence have been refused by the Single Judge.

"He is obviously disappointed - having carefully considered all of the information, we will be lodging renewed applications on conviction and sentence in the coming days."
