Craig Samson has terminated his contract with St Mirren to take up an offer to become goalkeeper coach at Sunderland.

The former Scotland international has decided to retire from playing immediately to join Jack Ross' backroom staff.

The Black Cats have moved quickly to replace Jimmy Walker, who has joined Paul Lambert at Ipswich for family reasons.

The 34-year-old calls time on a 17-year playing career that saw him play for Kilmarnock, Ross County and Motherwell among other clubs.

Samson had been first choice at St Mirren this season, playing 17 times.
