Doubts over Thomas

Thomas Myhre is rated as a major doubt ahead of the clash with Ipswich.

Thomas Myhre is rated as a major doubt ahead of Sunderland's crunch promotion clash with Ipswich Town on Sunday.

The Norwegian keeper has deputised impressively for Mart Poom this season but could miss out on the live Sky Sports fixture this weekend.

After being replaced at half time due to a back problem, Myhre could only watch on as the Championship leaders squandered a one-goal lead and were beaten 2-1 by Reading last Saturday.

With Wigan Athletic winning at Cardiff City, but Ipswich crashing 2-0 at Wolves on Monday, the promotion shake-up is wide open again.

Sunderland remain five points clear of the two challengers but defeat at Portman Road and a Wigan win at Leicester would leave things very much up in the air.

Myhre's participation could be key as Michael Ingham, who replaced him against Reading, and Ben Alnwick are lacking in experience.

"Thomas is in pain and he is a real doubt," said Black Cats boss Mick McCarthy.

"But Michael and Ben have been back-up all season so we have confidence in their ability."
