Belgium defender Nicolas Lombaerts has denied reports that a failed a medical saw his move to Sunderland collapse, insisting he did not complete the transfer because he is settled in Russia.

Sunderland had a £5m bid accepted by Zenit St Petersburg for the 30-year-old’s services only to see the move stall on Wednesday amid claims Lombaerts had failed a medical.

But Lombaerts, who played under Advocaat during the 67-year-old’s time at Zenit, says his sole focus is building on the success he has enjoyed with this year’s Russian title winners.

“The medical was not an issue,” Lombaerts told Sky Sports News HQ reporter Gary Cotterill.

“I don’t want to talk about the medical. People are making up stories. I decided to stay in Russia.

“Other teams in England were interested but I wanted to stay here. It’s my home here, and I feel happy.

“I have four games to become a Zenit legend. I will spend the remaining three years here, and maybe end my career here.”
