Derby correct to postpone Cardiff game, says EFL

Derby County

The English Football League is satisfied Derby County's decision to postpone their Sky Bet Championship match with Cardiff City was correct.

Derby announced the original match had been called off on Sunday morning due to heavy snowfall overnight which had left the surrounding areas at the stadium "in an unsafe condition for supporters, staff and officials".

Cardiff boss Neil Warnock calls the decision to cancel Sunday's match "a disgrace."

Derby maintained they followed the correct procedures, and they had all the necessary approvals from the authorities and emergency services.

The EFL says the club were right to postpone "in the circumstances at the time and that Derby County had made every effort to ensure the game had the opportunity to be played."

The EFL also noted that: "Whilst the correct decision was taken in postponing the match, clearer and more effective communication around the decision making processes on the day would have assisted an already challenging situation."

EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey added: "A number of important lessons have been learned and we will be working on some revised advice and guidance that will be issued to all 72 Clubs in the event they are faced with a similar scenario in the future."

Cardiff have issued a statement in response to the EFL's decision:

"Cardiff City FC notes the decision from the EFL regarding the postponement of our Sky Bet Championship fixture at Derby County FC.

"While we are not happy with their findings, we take comfort from the fact that the EFL have reminded Derby County of their responsibilities under the fixture protocol in this regard, in order to ensure the integrity of the competition is protected.

"We will comment further upon receipt of their detailed response to the points Cardiff City FC raised in the request for enquiry.

"Cardiff City supporters were those most affected by the postponement on the day and we hope their concerns are addressed.

"Once again, the club would like to thank all of those who made the trip to Pride Park, and will provide further updates to supporters in due course."

The game has been re-arranged for Tuesday, April 24.
