Former Chelsea star Frank Lampard has confirmed he is in talks with Derby County about taking over as manager.

The Rams are looking for a new boss after Gary Rowett switched to Midlands rivals Stoke last week.

Lampard, 39, has not made any secret of his desire to become a manager since his retirement as a player in 2017.

The former England midfielder was reported to be among 20 applicants for the Derby job following their play-off semi-final defeat against Fulham.

Sky Sports News reported last week that he was no longer in the running for the Ipswich Town job, having been interviewed twice by the managerless Championship side.

Ipswich have been without a manager since McCarthy abruptly quit his role last month, four games ahead of schedule, following a win over Barnsley.

Lampard's former England colleague Steven Gerrard recently took his first steps into management when he was hired by Scottish Premiership club Rangers.
