Ralph Hasenhuttl says Southampton produced a clinical, professional performance to beat Fulham 2-0

Ralph Hasenhuttl hailed "clinical" Southampton after his side earned a first win in five with a 2-0 victory over Fulham on Wednesday.

Goals from Oriol Romeu and James Ward-Prowse were enough for Saints to pick up the three points that moves them out of the bottom three, with Fulham now sitting 10 points from safety.

Saints picked up just their third home win under Hasenhuttl, but one that the Saints boss insists was deserved and crucial.

Highlights of Southampton's win over Fulham in the Premier League.

"I am happy that we took a very important win today, and a deserved one," Hasenhuttl told Sky Sports. "Fulham with long balls and two strikers in front are always dangerous.

"It was a really clinical performance from our team, very professional. We were working very hard for this three points. It was an important game for us.

"If you know our history about getting 2-0 in the lead, then you know that we were not calm, but today we found the right balance between keeping the ball and going behind that last line.

Claudio Ranieri says he cannot understand what has happened this season following Fulham’s 2-0 defeat against Southampton, but insists his team will continue fighting

"We had options to make the third maybe, but the game is always tight, but I think we deserved to win it and a good performance."

Hasenhuttl was particularly pleased to pick up the three points knowing just how tough his side's next two games are.

"Now we are playing against Man United and Tottenham then it was important that we took these three points, because the next two games are not so easy. These are the must wins.

"Another step in a long way we have to go until we are safe."
