£15 MILLION UNITED BID FOR DYER - CLAIM

ACCORDING to reports in the North East of England, Manchester United have had a £15 million bid for Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer rejected.

Dyer is currently sidelined for at least four months, after he had surgery on a long-standing shin problem, but this has seemingly not put United off.

And, despite the original approach being rejected, it would be fair to assume that The Red Devils will put together another bid in the next few months.

The news comes less than 24 hours after the Old Trafford club broke the British transfer record for Ruud van Nistelrooy, and United`s ambition for more new players was declared by chief executive Peter Kenyon over the weekend, who said it would not be the last signing in the next few months for the newly-crowned Premiership champions.

"The plans are in place and we know what we are looking to do and van Nistelrooy is the start," said Kenyon.

"I think we've said it would be more than one signing and it's a question of the right people and not just a question of quantity."

Leeds had originally been leading the chase for the former Ipswich ace, but The Red Devils see Dyer as an ideal signing, as his versatility would allow Sir Alex Ferguson to alter his formation when required, a flexibility which the current squad seems to be lacking.

The Newcastle faithful will be happy to see that the St James` Park hierarchy have shunned the initial overtures, but a bid of around £20 million would be very hard for the PLC board to turn down.

Ferguson`s list of summer targets is largely unknown, but it seems that the Scot is not wasting any time in making moves to bolster his squad.
