The former Guingamp man is expected to be the last winter recruit for Les Verts, with a loan deal set up with Harry Redknapp's Saints.
Yahia signed a three-year contract with the South Coast strugglers last summer but has yet to make his Premiership bow.
Southampton will continue to pay some of the 23-year-old's wages, but St Etienne have the option to purchase the Tunisian on a permanent basis at the end of the season.
With Yahia set to sign, Javier Garrido could terminate his season-long loan prematurely.
The Valencia full back could return to Spain as coach Elie Baup has been leaving him out recently.
