Sky Sports understands a host of Premier League clubs are weighing up moves for Bayer Leverkusen defender Philipp Wollscheid.

Leverkusen have confirmed they are willing to look at a loan with an option to buy for Germany international Wollscheid.

The 6ft 4in central defender featured 26 times for the Champions League club last term and cost Leverkusen €8million in January 2011 from Nurnberg.

News of his availability has alerted a number of Premier League sides who are looking to bolster their defensive options before the close of the transfer window.

The likes of Southampton, Sunderland, Newcastle and Hull City are all thought to be monitoring his situation, with Wollscheid aware that interest from England is mounting in him.

"I believe the club have discussed a permanent transfer but also a loan option for me at present," said Wollscheid.

"Outside of Germany, the main interest seems to be coming from the English Premier League, but I don’t know yet. We will have to wait and see."
