Stoke manager Mark Hughes is predicting another close encounter when they face Liverpool on Sunday.

The Potters are two points ahead of Liverpool but have played two games more than Jurgen Klopp's side and the last three meetings between the teams have been settled by a single goal.

Liverpool won 1-0 at the Britannia Stadium on the opening day of the season, with the teams then claiming 1-0 victories at each other's grounds in the two-legged semi-final of the Capital One Cup in January.

Hughes feels they have a mutual respect for each other but is hoping to secure a victory that could help them secure European football next season.

"There's only been a single goal in every game we have played against them this season, and last time we played exceptionally well, we deserved to win the game," he said.

Stoke boss Mark Hughes says his side played well to get 2-0 up but lost energy before eventually drawing 2-2

"We have cracked the ceiling somewhat with that result but there is healthy respect from both teams, I think.

"They understand we are a good side at this level and know it will be a difficult fixture for them, and we have the utmost respect for Liverpool and what they are able to produce.

"It will be a tough fixture, but it's one we are looking forward to because we don't feel any apprehension going up against any Premier League team."

Hughes' assistant Mark Bowen suggested earlier in the week Liverpool may be tired from their Europa League exertions on Thursday night.

But despite an emotional return for Klopp to face his former side Borussia Dortmund that ended in a 1-1 draw in the first leg of their quarter-final, Hughes is not convinced that will adversely affect them when they return to Premier League action.

"I think a lot of people feel it is a disadvantage and a lot of teams in the past seem to have been affected by Thursday-Sunday games," added Hughes.

Stoke manager, Mark Hughes, says Jack Butland will return from injury a better player

"I do think it is more of an issue if you have an away game, then come back and have to travel again for an away Premier League fixture.

"But given the resources of Liverpool and the fact they are the home side on Sunday, I wouldn't anticipate they will be affected too much."
