Kean targets Bluebirds defender

Sky Sports understands Blackburn Rovers are eyeing a move for Cardiff City defender Anthony Gerrard. Rovers boss Steve Kean has targeted a move for Gerrard as he sees him as an ideal replacement for Scott Dann who is widely expected to return to the Premier League this summer with a number of clubs chasing the former Birmingham man. Cardiff are thought to be open to offers for Gerrard with the 26-year-old surprisingly finding himself surplus to requirements in Malky Mackay's plans. The former Everton youngster is regarded as one of the best defenders outside the top flight and won player of the season awards during his first season at Cardiff and also scooped the prize during his successful loan spell at Hull City in the 2010/11 season. Gerrard returned to Cardiff last summer after Hull were unable to strike a deal to make his move permanent, but he found his first-team chances limited under Mackay. Blackburn are determined to build a squad capable of winning promotion back to the Premier League at the first attempt and Gerrard certainly fits Kean's requirement for a dominant central defender with extensive Championship experience after losing Chris Samba last February. A number of other clubs are thought to be tracking Gerrard, but Rovers are keen to lure him to Ewood Park.
