Eagles dealt Wiggins blow

Crystal Palace defender Rhoys Wiggins has been ruled out for six months.

Crystal Palace have been dealt an early blow in their pre-season campaign, after defender Rhoys Wiggins was ruled out for over six months with a knee injury.

The 18-year-old suffered from ruptured ligaments in Saturday's win over American feeder club Crystal Palace USA, after signing his first professional contract this summer.

The Wales Under-21 international has featured regularly in The Eagles' pre-season friendlies and was expected to break his way into the first-team squad at some point in the near future.

"Rhoys will have to have reconstructive surgery so he'll be out for a minimum of six months," said Palace coach Kit Symons.

Symons continued to say that he expects Wiggins to bounce back from his injury.

"He's an outstanding prospect and it's a huge blow to him, but it's a test of character and I'm sure he'll come back.

"He is very strong physically and he'll come back mentally stronger from this experience.

"The operations they do these days are fantastic, and have a very high success rate, so he'll no doubt come back a better, stronger player."
