Ipswich Town's plans for the new season have been rocked after Damien Delaney was ruled out for three months.
Delaney suffered a serious dead leg in training on Thursday and the defender will miss the start of the new Championship campaign.
He was unable to travel to Holland for Saturday's friendly with PSV Eindhoven and Ipswich boss Roy Keane acknowledged it was a major setback after he underwent two operations on a blood clot.
"It's a serious injury and he's a very lucky boy," said Keane on the club's official website.
"He was lucky our medical care got him to hospital quickly and they operated straight away and then he had more surgery today and we believe everything went well.
"Damien will probably be out for about three months. It's a big blow for us and a very serious injury."
Republic of Ireland international Delaney was a key figure for Ipswich last season as he made 39 appearances following his arrival from Queens Park Rangers.
