Jonathan Walters gives candid account of colonoscopy
Thursday 24 January 2019 12:16, UK
Burnley striker Jonathan Walters has taken to social media to give a brave and humorous account of his recent colonoscopy.
Walters lost his mother to bowel cancer when she was just 40 and the Republic of Ireland international needs to be checked regularly for any abnormalities.
He recently decided to post a first-hand account of the procedure to raise awareness and encourage others to do the same.
His retelling is written with disarming honesty and self-deprecation and has already encouraged former Liverpool striker Robbie Fowler to follow suit.
Bowel cancer is responsible for 10 per cent of all cancer-related deaths in the UK. In the most recent figures from Cancer Research UK, 16,384 people died from the disease in 2016.
Due to increased awareness and improved screenings such as the one Walters went through, deaths have dropped by a third in the last 20 years.
