Coventry City to investigate offensive tweet sent by defender Chris Stokes

Coventry will hold an internal investigation after Chris Stokes sent out a tweet containing a homophobic remark.

The defender posted the message on Twitter while watching Chelsea's game with Tottenham on Monday night, a 2-2 draw that confirmed Leicester as Premier League champions.

Stokes deleted the offensive message before going on to apologise in a subsequent tweet.

The Sky Blues have now issued a statement concerning the matter on their official website, which included a further apology from Stokes.

"I'd like to apologise for any offence I've caused," said Stokes.

"It was a brainless moment from me and I'm really disappointed in myself for using that term, I'm not homophobic at all.

"However, I know it is not acceptable by any means and I'm really sorry to any of our supporters or anyone in the wider public who have been offended by the remark."
