Midfielder hoping to seize second top flight opportunity

Shaun Derry is determined to make the most of his second stint as a Premier League performer. The midfielder helped Queens Park Rangers to the Championship title this season, meaning they will be back among the elite in 2011/12. At the age of 33, Derry believes his considerable experience could prove invaluable to Rangers in the top flight. He certainly hopes that proves to be the case, having endured a tough time at that lofty level on his only previous visit. Derry was a key part of the Crystal Palace side which clambered out of the second tier in 2004, but struggled to hold down a regular first-team place the following season and moved out on loan to Nottingham Forest before eventually signing for Leeds. He is keen to right those wrongs next season and is prepared to do all he can to force his way into Neil Warnock's thoughts.

Bit-part

"I was very much a bit-part player at Palace," said Derry. "I never felt I was given a proper chance, but that is water under the bridge. "Hopefully it can be different at QPR. And I do feel that the stage I'm at in my career, I'm more appreciated as a player at this club than I perhaps was at Palace when we went into the Premier League. "Hopefully with a bit of backing from the hierarchy upstairs and the backing of the manager, I can play my part next season."
