New Hoops chief confirms bid has been lodged with Blackburn

QPR boss Mark Hughes has confirmed he intends to raid former club Blackburn Rovers after conceding a bid has been lodged for Chris Samba. The wantaway centre-half did not figure for Blackburn in Saturday's defeat of Fulham amid speculation he had refused to play for the Lancashire outfit. This has since been denied by Rovers boss Steve Kean but the Scot's insistence that he wants to keep the player at Ewood Park is unlikely to silence talk of a move to either QPR or fellow suitors Tottenham. Hughes kicked off his QPR tenure with a 1-0 defeat at Newcastle on Sunday and his initial observations are likely to have concluded new players are needed in the transfer window.

New faces

When asked about Samba, Hughes said to Sky Sports News: "It's common knowledge we've put in a bid for Chris Samba. We have a number of players we would like to bring to the club. We'll have to wait and see." Regarding the possibility of adding new faces to his squad during the January transfer window, he added: "If there's quality available and attainable then we'll pursue that but they have to be the right players and they have to be the players who can come in and make a major impact because otherwise there's no point bringing them." Earlier on Saturday it was the turn of Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp to concede an admiration for Samba, although he stopped short of confirming a bid had been made. "He is a good player but not a player we have made enquiries for. He is in there making headers and leading the team," said Redknapp. When further probed on whether he would enter the bidding for the player, he added: "Listen, I would not say that [we are not going to sign him] and then we go and sign him in two weeks, I like him although we have not made enquires."
