Chris Ramsey believes that several of QPR’s top earners will have to be let go in the summer due to the club’s financial predicament, and he also lamented the lack of effort from some of his squad.
The R’s season ended in disappointing fashion after another hapless display in a 5-1 defeat at Leicester on the final day.
The likes of Rio Ferdinand, Richard Dunne, Shaun Wright-Phillips and Joey Barton are all out of contract in the summer, and look set to leave the club.
And with Financial Fair Play penalties likely to be enforced before the start of next season, Ramsey, speaking to Soccer Special, is fully aware of the predicament the club are in, and revealed that his hand will be forced when it comes to keeping hold of star players.
“There has to be [a clear-out of players],” Ramsey said.
“We are in a financial situation where we cannot maintain some of the high earners there at the moment. I am not in a position to disclose who will go at the moment, because they are in negotiations with the club.
“I would like to thank some of the older players who have shown the younger ones what it means to be a professional.
“If we could have replicated that attitude throughout the squad, then we would not have been in the position we are in. We can’t go on a crusade to get kids playing at the moment.
“Whether we recruit them or groom them will remain to be seen. We have to be careful and make sure we don’t slip down the leagues by over-extending ourselves."
Fans have voiced their disapproval on several occasions this campaign as their side have been relegated back to the Championship with little resistance provided.
Ramsey feels for those loyal supporters, and insisted he is far from pleased with the application of some of his squad.
“There were a lot of players that weren’t available and probably haven’t done themselves justice," Ramsey added.
“Players just weren’t putting themselves in the best possible shape to help the club. We had players that just weren’t able to train up to the same standards as the other players.
“As a professional footballer who earns vast sums of money, the least you expect is someone to come in and always put themselves in a position to be picked.
“People go out to work and save their money to buy their season tickets, and the least they want is someone that can run about and produce the form that they have been signed for, so that was disappointing."
