Leicester want Craig Shakespeare to stay in charge until the summer - Sky sources

Leicester City have told Craig Shakespeare they want him to stay in charge until the summer, Sky sources understand.

The club's Thai owners have met with their caretaker manager at City's warm weather training camp in Dubai.

Formal talks will begin after the squad returns to the UK on Wednesday but Shakespeare has been informed there is a desire for him to remain at the helm for the rest of the season.

It is understood Shakespeare wants certain guarantees about the terms and duration of any new contract before agreeing to take the role on a more long-term basis.

After overseeing back-to-back Premier League victories over Liverpool and Hull which have lifted Leicester five points clear of the relegation places, he feels his stock is high.

It is therefore believed Shakespeare wants that reflected in any new deal. He is also aware his position could be vulnerable if Leicester decide to appoint another manager in the summer.

The club's owners have been impressed with the turnaround in mood and form showed by the team since Claudio Ranieri was sacked a fortnight ago.

Although the Leicester board have 'sounded out' other possible candidates, including former England manager Roy Hodgson, retaining Shakespeare for now at least is their preference.

Sky Sports News HQ has been told the 53-year-old is keen to resolve his future before Leicester's Champions League last-16 second leg tie against Sevilla next week.

Currently in his second spell at the club, Shakespeare has 15 months left on his existing deal as assistant manager.
