Recent Barnsley signing Jason Shackell has told
skysports.com he is delighted to have been awarded the captain's armband at Oakwell.
Manager Mark Robins appointed the former Norwich City defender as his skipper for the 2010/11 season after the 26-year-old ended his two-year spell at Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Shackell has previously been captain at Norwich and he is looking forward to the challenge of carrying out the same role with Barnsley.
"Yes, I'm obviously thrilled and it's another chance to lead a team out having performed the same role at Carrow Road," said Shackell.
"I was looking for a fresh challenge with a new club and coming to Barnsley has given me what I was hoping for in terms of an exciting side, a great fanbase, and a club that, on a good day, can beat anyone in the Championship."
Tough decision
Shackell spent last season on loan at Doncaster Rovers and, although he has chosen Yorkshire rivals Barnsley, he said it was a tough decision.
He continued: "It was hard to decide where I would play this season as I had a couple of offers, but I was impressed when I met the gaffer here.
"We got on well and he told me what he was looking to do with the club and how he was going to take it forward, so that made my mind up.
"I had a good season at Donny, played with some great lads who play a terrific brand of football, and the manager Sean O'Driscoll and his assistant Richard O'Kelly were fantastic as well.
"I just thought that this move was the right one for me and I look forward to the start of the season and the first match against QPR."
