Sky Sports understands that Championship side Barnsley are lining up a deal for Martin Cranie.
The 25-year-old has been a free agent since leaving Coventry City at the end of last season.
A number of clubs have shown an interest and he held talks with the likes of Middlesbrough and Leeds United. who he also trained with in pre-season.
But now Cranie has linked up with Keith Hill's side and looks set to be handed a deal by the Tykes.
Indeed it is believed Cranie could be signed in time to be available for Saturday's opening league match with Middlesbrough.
