Steve Evans says he’s impressed with the manner in which the Leeds players have reacted to his appointment as manager

With Leeds 18th in the Championship and without a home win since March, Evans knows he has a big task on his hands, but insists a promotion bid is on the cards.

Leeds United defender Giuseppe Bellusci scores perhaps the own goal of the season against Middlesbrough.

He exclusively told Sky Sports' FL72 Podcast: "Of course we've got a chance. If we'd won the other night we'd have bounced into mid-table.

"If we can go and get a couple of wins in our next two or three matches, we'll be in the top half of the table with no more than 14 or 15 matches gone. We'd be very much part of it.

"I'll win football matches, I think I need to be given a little bit of time to put some players on the pitch.

"We feel we need a bit more quality in certain areas, and I'll bring winning football back to Elland Road there's no doubt about that."

Leeds owner Massimo Cellino claims he is still running the club despite being banned by the Football League.

The Italian has been suspended from undertaking any ownership or directorship duties at Elland Road for the rest of the season after he was found guilty of failing to pay VAT on an imported vehicle, although Cellino claims the case is not yet finished.

But 52-year-old Scot Evans says footballing and recruitment final decisions will be down to him personally, as Leeds look to form some stability having had six managers in 18 months.

"The final say as to whether players join this football club is with me, I'm the manager, I'm responsible for results on the pitch. They don't need to look at the chairman.

"We're looking along with the recruitment staff and the president here to strengthen when we can.

"There's a lot of work to do be done here, when you don't win at home for seven months and you're Leeds United, alarm bells ring."
