Leeds have defended hat-trick hero Samu Saiz, after Port Vale manager Michael Brown accused the new signing of spitting.

Midfielder Saiz, signed for a reported £3m from Huesca in July, marked his first appearance in England with three goals to hand Leeds a 4-1 win over Port Vale in the Carabao Cup.

Brown claims the Spaniard - who slammed home Leeds' early opener - spat in Vale defender Joe Davis' face shortly before half-time, before adding two more superb finishes in as many minutes in the second half.

The Football Association are aware of the allegation and are investigating the incident.

Brown revealed he had asked Leeds' staff to take Saiz off at half-time following the alleged incident, but the Yorkshire club have now protested their confidence in the player's innocence.

"We are disappointed by allegations made following our game with Port Vale last night, we are also disappointed by the treatment of our players throughout the match," a Leeds spokesperson said.
