Southend boss Phil Brown has hailed Simon Cox as a "fantastic signing" for the club after the Republic of Ireland international agreed to move to Roots Hall.
Cox will join the Blues on a two-year deal, subject to a medical, following his release by Reading this summer and Brown is thrilled to have captured the 29-year-old's signature.
Brown told the club's official website: "It's a fantastic signing, I can't thank the chairman enough for this deal, I'm very hopeful that someone of Simon's pedigree will replace Jack Payne's goals.
"I've been working hard and long to pull this signing off and I can't thank the chairman enough for pushing this through, it's a real coup for the club."
Cox has scored 91 goals in 255 league starts for the likes of Swindon, West Brom, Nottingham Forest and Reading.
He has also struck four times in 30 appearances for the Republic of Ireland.
