League One review: Ched Evans helps fire Chesterfield to the top

Ched Evans fired a double to take his tally to four in as many games as Chesterfield climbed top of Sky Bet League One with a 2-0 home win against Walsall.

Evans, 27, who joined Chesterfield on a 12-month deal, struck twice in the space of four second-half minutes to help his side secure back-to-back home wins.

Scunthorpe moved into second place after maintaining their unbeaten start to the season with a 2-1 win at newly-promoted AFC Wimbledon.

Tom Hopper headed Scunthorpe into a 23rd-minute lead and was brought down by home defender Darius Charles in the area just before the break, with Josh Morris converting the subsequent penalty.

Charles pulled one back for the Dons in the 61st minute but they have yet to register their first point in League One.

Overnight leaders Gillingham slipped to third after being held to a 1-1 draw by Swindon at Priestfield.

Michael Doughty converted a 55th-minute penalty to put Swindon ahead after Paul Konchesky had fouled Darnell Furlong, but Gillingham hit back through Rory Donnelly in the 71st minute.

Summer signing Jack O'Connell's own goal in the fifth minute put the Blades on the back foot before Stephen McLaughlin (13) and Simon Cox (15) put Southend three up.

The Blades are third from bottom with just one point from their first three games.

Millwall crashed to their first defeat of the season, going down 5-1 at Peterborough.

The hosts were two up inside the first seven minutes thanks to goals from Marcus Maddison and Paul Taylor before Gwion Williams headed their third in the 20th minute.

Edwards (52) added his second and Tom Nichols struck Posh's fifth in the 67th minute before Steve Morison notched a 79th-minute consolation.

Charlton clinched their first win under manager Russell Slade with a 3-0 home victory against Shrewsbury.

Two goals in as many minutes midway through the first half from Ricky Holmes (22) and skipper Johnnie Jackson (24) put the Addicks in command and the former grabbed his second in the 31st minutes direct from a corner.

Bradford made it two successive wins on the road thanks to a 2-1 success at MK Dons.

On-loan West Ham midfielder Josh Cullen fired Bradford ahead in the 12th minute and Billy Clarke added their second five minutes later. Edward Upson struck for the home side in stoppage time.

Nathan Smith headed the only goal as Port Vale beat Rochdale 1-0 at Vale Park despite home midfielder JJ Hooper missing a late penalty.

Coventry drew 0-0 at home against Bury and Northampton picked up a point for the third game in a row with the goalless stalemate at Oldham.
