Preston striker poised for Wednesday switch
Skysports.com understands Preston North End forward Neil Mellor is set to join Sheffield Wednesday on a season-long loan.
The 27-year-old striker scored 10 goals in 39 Championship appearances for Preston last term, but has fallen out of favour at Deepdale under Darren Ferguson.
If he makes the switch to Hillsborough he will link up with former manager Alan Irvine, who took the reins at the South Yorkshire club last season.
Irvine was unable to keep the Owls in the second tier, however, and they dropped down to League One on a dramatic final day of the campaign.
Mellor began his career as a youngster at Liverpool but did not make the grade at the Premier League outfit.
His most memorable moment came when he scored a superb last-minute winner at Anfield against Arsenal in 2004.
Following loan moves at West Ham and Wigan, Mellor has spent four years at Preston where he became a regular in the first team.
If he does complete a switch to Wednesday he will follow in the footsteps of his father Ian, who also played for the club.
