Bristol City wasted the chance to go seven points clear at the top of League One as they fell to a 3-1 home defeat against Sheffield United.
City led 1-0 at half-time on Saturday thanks to Matt Smith's 41st-minute goal, but they were unable to withstand plenty of Blades pressure after the interval.
Deadline-day signing Matt Done levelled the scores nine minutes after half-time and the former Rochdale man made it 2-1 with 13 minutes to go, with Jamie Murphy's strike on 82 sealing three points for Nigel Clough's side at Ashton Gate.
Victory was enough to lift Sheffield United into fifth on a day when the remaining high-flyers all failed to take advantage of City's defeat.
Huge win for Iron
Second-placed Swindon Town went down 3-1 at lowly Scunthorpe despite, like the leaders, leading at half-time through a Smith goal... Michael on this occasion.
Paddy Madden levelled on 62 and goals in the final 15 minutes from Niall Canavan and January signing Kevin van Veen secured victory for the Iron.
MK Dons were stunned 4-2 by Gillingham at Priestfield - they trailed 2-0 to goals from Cody McDonald and Bradley Dack before levelling through Devante Cole and Ben Reeves.
But Bradley Garmston restored the Gills' lead 15 minutes from time and in-form striker John Marquis was on target with an 81st-minute shot to confirm victory for Justin Edinburgh's men.
Preston were not in action because of Monday's FA Cup clash at home to Manchester United, and they remain fourth, and Oldham drop to sixth after a 1-0 home defeat by Colchester, Sammie Szmodics with the only goal inside two minutes at Boundary Park.
Orient snatch win
Leyton Orient climbed off the bottom of the table with a last-gasp 3-2 win over Chesterfield at the Proact Stadium, Dean Cox scoring their winner in the 11th minute of added time. David Mooney scored their other two goals.
That leaves Yeovil to prop up the rest of the table after they slumped to a 3-0 defeat at Doncaster; Nathan Tyson, Dean Furman and Kyle Bennett scored Rovers' goals.
Crawley Town were the biggest winners of the afternoon as they thrashed managerless Barnsley 5-1 to move up to 22nd. Izale McLeod scored a hat-trick for Dean Saunders' men.
Crewe continued their climb away from trouble with goals from Nicky Ajose and Marcus Haber seeing them past Fleetwood 2-0.
Harry Beautyman and Christian Burgess scored in the first seven minutes to help Peterborough to a 2-1 win over Rochdale and Tom Pope's 28th minute goal was enough for Port Vale to win 1-0 at Walsall.
