Railwaymen hunt Beevers

Lincoln could be set for a cash windfall if Crewe pursue their interest in Lee Beevers.

Lincoln City could be set for a cash windfall if Crewe pursue their interest in Lee Beevers.

The defender only moved to Sincil Bank in February, but he has subsequently caught the eye with a number of impressive performances.

Imps manager Keith Alexander has warned Gradi that the services of the former Wales Under-21 skipper will not come cheaply, although that is unlikely to worry the Alex boss unduly.

It has also been reported that the Championship outfit are keen on City's highly-rated centre half Jamie McCombe, although it is understood that this interest has now cooled as the focus has switched to his team-mate.

Alexander paid £50,000 to local rivals Boston United in order to secure the 22-year-old's signature and he says that he views his player as an investment.

"I know Crewe are looking at Lee and they have also watched Jamie McCombe on numerous occasions," he told the Lincolnshire Echo.

"But the fact is none of my players will leave on the cheap and I'm sure Dario knows that.

"Beevers is a former Welsh Under-21 international and a very good player to boot.

"He is rated very highly by Brian Flynn, the Wales Under-21 coach, and he is a good, strong professional for us.

"I paid a lot of money to sign him from Boston United and I don't want to lose any of my best players.

"If a club is serious about putting in an offer, then it can't be a silly one."

Gradi also confirmed that he is keeping a close eye on City, although he refused to reveal the identity of his target, saying: "I can confirm we've watched Lincoln since we played them in the cup and are still looking at one of their players."

Meanwhile, Alexander has laughed off reports that Scunthorpe's Michael Rankine is on trial at Sincil Bank.

"I do not want to sign Michael Rankine and neither is he on trial," said Alexander. "I'm sure Brian Laws would love me to take him off his hands, but it won't happen."

Chairman of football Ray Trew added: "We need someone prolific who can stick the ball in the net."
