Russ Wilcox has been sacked by Scunthorpe barely six months after he broke a 125-year record for unbeaten matches.

A statement on the League One club's wesbite confirmed the manager and assistant John Schofield had their contracts terminated following Tuesday's Football League Trophy defeat to Notts County - Iron's fourth in a row and 10th already this season.

Wilcox led Scunthorpe to promotion from League Two in the spring after going 28 league games unbeaten following his appointment as Brian Laws' successor.

That achievement surpassed the 23 matches William Sudell went without defeat when he took charge of Preston in 1888-9 and saw Sir Alex Ferguson present Wilcox with a special merit award at the League Managers' Association dinner.

But Scunthorpe have won just twice in League One this season and sit second-bottom after 11 games.

Andy Dawson will take temporary charge for Saturday's trip to Gillingham, with Tony Daws assisting.
