Wigan have had an offer for Danny Fox rejected by Nottingham Forest, Sky Sports News understands.
Forest are keen to keep the man who has been the team captain for most of this season, and new manager Martin O'Neill wants to assess all his current squad before any transfers are sanctioned.
But Fox's contract expires in the summer, and Wigan are expected to pursue the deal.
Fox, 32, has made 21 appearances for Forest this season.
The defender was sent off in Forest's last game, a 2-0 defeat to Reading.
Forest parted company with Aitor Karanka last week, and O'Neill becomes their 11th manager since June 2011.
His first game in charge will be on Saturday, when Bristol City will visit the City Ground.
