As part of the ongoing "My Greatest Game" series, Trevor Francis discusses Nottingham Forest’s 1979 European Cup final victory – what he believes to be the highlight of his playing career.
“We knew that they were from Sweden, and that was about it," Francis says of Malmo, the team Forest beat 1-0 at the Olympiastadion in Munich to claim their first European Cup in May 1979.
Brian Clough’s side had beaten Liverpool, AEK Athens, Grasshopper and FC Koln to reach the showpiece clash, and in front of 68,000 fans Francis scored the only goal of the game, after replacing Martin O’Neill in the starting line-up.
Francis pays tribute to team-mate John Robertson, who he believes was the “best player in Europe” around that time, while describing the goal that went down in history as the most important of his career.
“I remember being in quite a deep position, some 35 or 40 yards from goal, and the ball was played out to the left-hand side.
“My directive from the manager was always to make sure I was in at the far post, because whenever John Robertson received possession, as he did on this occasion, nine times out of 10 he would pass his full-back and deliver a cross into the box. That’s exactly what he did and I had to make up a lot of ground to make sure I was on the end of it.
“As the cross came in, I had to make good contact with my head, and I tried to direct it back from where it had come from, and I managed to do that.”
