Southampton hope to win race for striker

Sky Sports understands Doncaster striker Billy Sharp is undergoing a medical at Southampton ahead of a possible move to St Mary's. Sharp has been tipped to leave Doncaster this month with the South Yorkshire outfit resigned to losing the player. Sharp rejected the opportunity to join fellow Championship club Leicester earlier this month after a bid from the Foxes activated a release clause in his contract. A number of clubs have been linked with the 25-year-old, but it appears Southampton are in pole position to land the former Sheffield United man. Southampton have held a long-term interest in Sharp and tried to sign the forward last summer only for the move to fall through. Saints boss Nigel Adkins has been searching for striking reinforcements all month and he will be hoping to tie up a deal for Sharp before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
