Gillingham's summer signing Lee Martin faces a lengthy spell out of action after suffering a serious injury during their pre-season friendly against Leyton Orient.

The midfielder landed awkwardly as he attempted a cross at the Matchroom Stadium in east London on Saturday.

The managers of the two clubs, Gillingham's Justin Edinburgh and Orient's Andy Hessenthaler, agreed for the game to end early following the 77th minute incident.

Edinburgh said Martin appeared to have sustained a dislocated and broken ankle.

The former Tottenham defender Edinburgh told the Mirror: "It's not good news and from the physio assessing it, it looks like a broken and dislocated ankle. It is a real bad injury.

"Our thoughts are with Lee. I know his mum and dad were at the game and we hope he makes a quick recovery.

"Unfortunately, that is football and you know that it's a contact sport and you can have injuries. We have had a spate of them but that's what we have to put up with."

Orient were 2-0 ahead at the time of Martin's injury thanks to first half goals from Jordan Bowery and a Jay Simpson penalty.

Martin, who required eight minutes of treatment before being carried off the pitch, had replaced Bradley Dack at half-time.

The 29-year-old Taunton-born player had signed for the Gills earlier this month, having been on the books at Millwall. He spent the second half of last season with Northampton.
